Prof. Dr. Luiz Marcos Garcia Gonçalves
Luiz Marcos Garcia Gonçalves holds a BSc in Computer Science from State University of Rio de Janeiro in 1993 and a Doctorate in Systems and Computer Engineering from Computer Graphics Lab (LCG) of COPPE-UFRJ in 1999 including a two years stage at the Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics of UMASS at Amherst, MA, USA.
He is currently a Full Professor at the Computer Engineering and Automation Department of Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Brazil. His research interest is in the several aspects of Graphics Processing including topics as robotics vision (main interest), computer graphics, GIS, geometric modelling, animation, image processing, computer vision, and on Robotics in Education.
He is one of the leading researchers in the field of Robotics in Brazil. He founded the Brazilian Robotics Competition (2003), the Brazilian Robotics Symposium (EnRI/SBR, 2004), the Educational Robotics Workshop (WRE, 2008), the Special Committee on Robotics of SBC (2005, serving as Chair from 2005 to 2010), the South American RoboCup (2005-2011, serving as Chair from 2005 to 2011), the RoboCup Brazil (2007, serving on the Council from 2007 to 2023), the Brazilian Robotics Olympiad (2007, serving as Coordinator in 2008 and 2011 with financial support from CNPq), and recently collaborated with the robotics community to establish the Brazilian Robotics Society (founded in July 2024), of which he is a member of the Council (2024-2026).
