Prof. Dr. Roger Chen
Dr. Chen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering (CEE) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). His research agenda focuses on understanding and modeling the human dimensions of smart and connected cities, and mobility services. He has worked on projects investigating roadway asset management with machine learning approaches, expanding the capabilities for detecting infrastructure conditions with emerging data types such as LiDAR.
Additionally, he has work on applying machine learning towards automating the development of Building Information Models (BIM). In the travel behavior area, he has expertise in the development, estimation and application of advanced travel demand models, including work developing choice models with randomly distributed values of time (user heterogeneity), which have been integrated within dynamic traffic assignment modeling platforms for predicting responses to congestion pricing and varying weather patterns.
Dr. Chen is currently a member and Committee Research Coordinator for the TRB Standing Committee AEP35 on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Travel Choices, and a member of AEP30 the Standing Committee on Traveler Behavior and Values. He is also chair for AEP30(2) the subcommittee on Route Choice and Spatial-Temporal Processes. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park, and his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, all in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
